Nursing Career Pathways at Harrogate & District NHSFT

Care Support Worker
BAND 2

Our care support workers are responsible for supporting patients in their everyday tasks, and work in both community and hospital settings. This role is an excellent entry point into nursing as you will gain practical experience while also studying for the Care Certificate.

Senior Care Support Worker
BAND 3

Senior care support workers are a vital part of our multidisciplinary teams, working closely with other staff to provide excellent care. Our senior care support worker roles are suitable for staff with greater experience as there are additional responsibilities and clinical duties.

Registered Nurse
BAND 5

Our registered nurses work across all our services including acute settings, the Outpatient Department and the Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre. We offer a two year preceptorship programme for newly qualified nurses, as well as rotational roles to allow our staff to develop skills and experience across different areas.

Sister/Charge Nurse
BAND 6

Supporting the ward manager, the role of sister is focused on ensuring the highest standard of clinical care is provided on the ward. This role is an excellent opportunity to develop both clinical and managerial skills.

Ward Manager/Senior Sister
BAND 7

This is a key leadership position within the nursing team, with a focus on being a role model for compassion in care. This role is accountable for ensuring the highest standard of care is delivered. Ward managers and senior sisters will constantly promote patient safety, effective care and a positive patient experience at each stage of the patient’s journey.

Matron
BAND 8A

The matron is a senior leader in the nursing team who is responsible for the clinical and managerial responsibility for a number of wards within a directorate. Understanding the local and national health agenda is paramount to this role to ensure services are developed and maintained to meet the changing demands of our patients.

Head of Nursing

This role is a senior nursing role which has a directorate responsibility for governance, patient safety, patient experience and leadership. The head of nursing directly manages the matrons and a number of service leads. The role also has a corporate responsibility and leads on specific pieces of work on behalf of the directorate and the chief nurse.
